Prep Guide
Session Goals
My goal with every headshot session is to help you feel like your most natural self and leave with portraits you feel proud of and confident sharing.
I know getting your headshot taken can feel intimidating. That’s completely normal. My job is to guide you through the process, keep things relaxed, and make sure you feel comfortable from start to finish.
This prep guide walks through what to expect, what to wear, how the session flows, and a few simple things that can help you feel ready when it’s time to step in front of the camera.
Ready, set,
go!
Location is everything
Each location has a slightly different feel, but the experience and level of guidance stay the same.
-
Easy peasy! We’ll be there with plenty of time to set up and have everything ready to go for when you arrive.
SPACE - Ideally, we'd have a 10x25-foot space for lights and a backdrop but have worked in much smaller locations.

I have two studios at the moment:

What to wear
This part can feel overwhelming, so here’s my advice: keep it simple and wear something you feel good in.
For business headshots, choose clothing that feels professional and fits well. Unless it’s part of your brand, I recommend avoiding:
Stripes
Busy patterns
Logos or graphic t-shirts
Hats
Very bright colors
Plaid or checks
Loose or baggy button-downs
If you’re unsure, bring a couple of options. I’m always happy to help you decide.

In Front of the camera
It’s common for the first few frames to feel a little awkward. That usually fades quickly. Here are a few things that help:
Breathe
A few slow inhales and exhales go a long way. There’s no rush.
Relax your shoulders
Tension often shows up there first. Drop your shoulders, loosen your jaw, and give your body a quick shake if you need to.
Tell me your “side”
If you have a side of your face you prefer, let me know right away so I can position you comfortably.
Bring options
Not sure about a jacket or sweater? Bring it along. You’re welcome to change or add layers during the session. My studio has mirrors and restrooms available.
Try a range of expressions
I’ll guide you through posing and help with things like hand placement. We’ll explore a mix of expressions—from relaxed and approachable to more serious or confident—so you have options.
Take a look
I’m happy to review images with you during the session. If something doesn’t feel right, we’ll adjust and keep shooting until it does.
Final note
If you show up on time and as yourself, you’ve done your part. From there, I’ll take care of the rest.
